|Resume_fr=Johann Bouma-Teye was born in Driebergen in Holland on 21 January 1917 as the first son of Jan Liebbe Bouma and Mathilda Augustina. In 1938 he worked as an assistant pharmacist to Professor S. de Boer in Groningen University. He completed his undergraduate general medical studies in Groningen in 1941. In 1941 he travelled to Newcastle on Tyne to Durham University hospital where he spent three months in an academic hospital in the fields of paediatrics, surgery, obstetrics and optometry. He then spent a further 1 1/2 months in nerurology before returning to Groningen. Johann recieved his doctorate in medicine in Kiel in 1943, and also met his wife (Grete Frahm) while there. In November 1943 he joined the Kinderklinik in the Reichsuniversität Straßburg in the role of Médicin volontaire. He did not formally join any political party and claimed to be apolitical.
