Egon Unshelm was born in Berlin on 2 March 1900 to Dr Moritz Unshelm and Helene Unshelm (Guse). He took part in the First World War in 1918 as a Fahnenjunker. When the war ended, he began his medical studies in the University of Berlin, and completed his exams in 1923. In 1923 he became a Medizinalpraktikant at the University Childrens Clinic in Berlin, and transferred to the Medical Clinic in 1924. Unshelm became a Medizinalpraktikant, an then a Volontärassistent at the Pathology Institute of Berlin-Westend hospital in 1925 [1]. He trained at the physiological chemical institute at the University of Leipzig with the help of the Rockerfeller Foundation from 1925 to 1927 [2]. In 1927 he received his promotion at the University of Bonn as a result of his work entitled 'Ein klinisch bemerkenswerter Fall von Pseudohermaphroditismus masculinus completus'. Unshelm then returned to paediatrics, when he became an asssistant at the University Kinderklinik in Hamburg from 1927-1931. He then became a Wissenschaftliche Assistent at the University Kinderklinik in Köln from 1931 to 1935. In 1935 he completed his habilitation at the University of Köln entitled 'Über das Glykogen im Blut des Menschen'. In 1935 he became the head doctor and lecturer for paediatrics at the academy of medicine in Düsseldorf. Later that year, he took a position as professor of paediatrics in the University of Rostock up to 1942. From 1939 to 1941 he was a member of the Wehrmacht. In 1942 he was director of the children's clinic at the Stadtkrankenhaus in Karlsruhe [2] . He then came to join the Reichsuniversität Straßburg children's clinic in 1944 as a professor [3]. Little is known about his clinical or research activities in Strasbourg, and his postwar career is unknown.
