In 1937 he joined the 14 company of infantry regimen, and took part in the Polish campaign in 1939. In 1940 he joined the military medical academy in Berlin and began his medical studies there. He spent some time studying in Freiburg im Breisgau, where he passed his preliminary examinations. From 1 August to 31 October 1942 he practiced as a doctor with the Panzer Grenadier Regimend in Russia. Then he completed his clinical studies at the Reichsuniversität Straßburg before being commanded to return to Berlin in 1944.
