Hansjörg Steinmaurer was born in 1909 in Ried Traunkries and was an only child. His father was a practicing physician. He began his medical studies in the University of Innsbruck in 1928, and spent a semester in the University of Vienna in 1931. On 8 July 1934 he finished his medical student exams in Vienna. He spent one year in Med Klinik III under the direction of Professor Chostek, and six months in the practice of haematology under P.A. Hittmaer. He was then promoted to the position of Hilfsarzt under Dr Hamburger in the childrens clinic at the University of Vienna. In July 1940 he habilitated in paediatrics, and became a Dozent for paediatrics in March 1941 at the University of Vienna. He also worked in serotherapeutics and pathological anatomy while studying medicine, and spent six months in Mödling with Professor Gerasch on the topic of medical research on animals. He joined the Nazi Party on 26 April 1933, and began working in the Reichsuniversitat Strassburg in 1941.
