Eugen Rau was born in 1917 in Stuttgart. He studied medicine in the University of Tubingen from 1939 and then immaatriculated at the Reichuniversität Strassburg in 1941. He spent the summer semester in 1942 on the Eastern Front, and the Easter break in 1942 in the surgical department of the Reservelazrette in Mulhouse. In 1944 he sat his state exams in medicine at the Reichsuniversität Strassburg.
