Following his Abiturium in 1938, Dahms joined the Reichsarbeitsdienst. In October of that year he also joined the Wehrmacht as a sanitary officer. After completing his infantry training, he began studying medicine in Berlin in 1939. He completed his medical studies examinations in 1942 in Wurzburg and began clinical training in the Reichsuniversität Straßburg.
